When renowned colorist Mark Wielage (Hey, Marc!) gave a YouTube tour of his grading suite, our website blew up—orders for our desk lamp started pouring in. We almost ran out of lamps.

Thousands of miles away at NAB Las Vegas at the time and curious about the sudden surge in demand, we asked a customer how she found us. She sent us this link.

While everyone else admired Marc’s impressive setup, we fixated on something else: the five desk lamps in his workspace. Each base took up valuable space, and because he had them neatly tucked behind his control panels, the knobs were hard to reach. The lack of persistent memory meant that he’d have to reach behind to turn reset the lights whenever master power was turned off. 

For years, we’d been kicking around the idea of a compact, portable lighting solution for DITs—where cramped carts mean everything needs to be out in the open and accessible. Seeing Marc’s setup, we realized: this wasn’t just a DIT problem. Colorists needed it too.

Anyway, we removed the base from one of our desk lamps and then spent the next 18 months figuring out the best way to mount, power, and control it.

After many false starts and wrong turns (and more budget than we’d like to admit), the answer was staring us in the face. By using ubiquitous USB connections as both the power source and stand, we landed on a clean, efficient design without compromising performance. (Early versions featured ¼" tripod mounts and magnets—because, naturally, we had to exhaust every other idea first.)

Disclaimer: While the custom USB plug is designed to minimize strain and ensure a stable connection, accidents can still happen. We strongly recommend using a USB port on a hub, power bank, adapter or power strip rather than the USB port on your high-end monitor or laptop. The DIT lamp is built for stability, but let’s not push our luck. :)
