MediaLight Mk2 v2 Installation Instructions

🔧 Quick Start: MediaLight Mk2 v2 Installation

  • Plan your route. Measure about 2in from the TV’s edge and decide if you’re going around 3 or 4 sides. If your TV has a ridge, step, or hump, don’t follow the contour—bridge it at roughly a 45° angle with a small air gap so the LEDs still face the wall evenly.
  • Start from the power end. Begin on the side closest to your USB or power source. Leave the corners slightly loose—don’t mash them down flat or you may tear the copper strip. If your corners look perfectly square, they’re probably too tight.
  • Power on & adjust. Connect to a 5V USB port only. Use the dimmer to set brightness and confirm that the glow is even. Never connect to 12V or higher. Some dimmers support 5–24V strips but do not convert voltage.

⚠️ The pure copper strips in your MediaLight Mk2 are excellent conductors of heat and electricity but are also soft and can tear if stressed. Do not mash the corners flat — leave them slightly loose to prevent damage. If you’re unsure about placement, please contact us for help.

MediaLight Mk2 v2: What's New?

1. Improved Adhesive
Ultra High Bond adhesive
Upgraded Ultra High Bond acrylic adhesive with a clear backing (no red tint) and a starter tab that makes peeling easier.

2. Optional Nano Tape
Nano tape roll
Each kit now includes residue-free nano tape. For best results, cut into 1in pieces and space them every 6–12in (closer on horizontal runs). Use this if you want the option to remove the strip later without leaving adhesive behind.

3. Redesigned Remote & Brightness Control
Remote

Now with 150 brightness stops. The lowest range (0–20%) has 30 fine levels so you can dial in subtle adjustments.

Note on Using the New Dimmers:

  • For remote-control dimmers (Mk2 v2 and Pro2): use the 10% or 20% buttons to jump directly to those levels and then use the “+” and “–” buttons to fine tune. At the high end, some steps may not appear visually distinct without instrumentation—this is intentional, as the increments are extremely fine to comply with Dolby Vision recommended practices and SMPTE reference guidelines.
  • For the flicker-free button dimmers: hold + or for coarse adjustments, and tap briefly for fine adjustments at lower levels.

Learn more about why brightness steps can feel less obvious at higher levels in our blog post on the Weber–Fechner law.

4. Flicker-Free + Slow Fade
Flicker test
New flicker-free dimmer eliminates visible flicker. Slow fade on/off prevents the “flash” that older dimmers showed on certain TVs.

5. Improved USB Switch Wiring (MediaLight Flex and Pro only, not included with Eclipse models).
USB switch
Thicker copper wiring lowers resistance and heat, giving more consistent performance with longer strips. We’ve also added universal O/I symbols.

6. Additional Mounting Clips
Mounting clips
Now includes flat clips for removable panels and hook-and-loop tabs for positioning the remote or switch.

7. Improved LED Consistency
Color variance reduced to ±50 K for smoother, uniform 6500 K output.

8. Updated Packaging
Packaging
Now includes CE, RoHS, disposal marks, both imperial/metric, plus new sizes: 7 m strip (no drop) and 2 m Eclipse.

Installation Instructions

⚠️ Handle gently: The copper PCB conducts heat and power efficiently but is softer than cheaper alloy. Don’t press corners flat. Slight lifting at corners is expected and harmless.

If removal is needed, apply low heat (hair dryer) and peel slowly. Secure the dimmer with a bit of nano tape to take strain off the strip connector.

1) Plan Layout
Mount strips about 2 in (5 cm) from the display edge.
Exception: 1 m Eclipse/LX1 installs as an inverted “U”.
Tip: If your TV has a ridge, step, or hump along the back, do not follow the contour—bridge across it at roughly a 45° angle with a small air gap so the LEDs continue to face the wall evenly.

Inverted U

For the inverted-U, find the midpoint, secure ~1/3 down from the top of the display, then run down both sides leaving 3–4 in from the edges.

Tip: If the USB port is on a side, make sure the MediaLight USB connector will be on that side.

Coverage: 4-sided is most even. 3-sided (top/sides) works well if a soundbar, cables, mantle, or stand block the bottom.

2) Start with Power End: Begin on the side nearest your power source for clean routing.

3) Apply the Strip
Built-in adhesive: peel tab and press gently.
Nano tape option: leave backing on strip and use 1 in pieces every 6–12 in.

Optimizing LED Strip Corner Installation

To ensure the longevity and performance of your bias lighting system, we are updating our recommended cornering techniques. While various methods exist, our experience indicates that the following two approaches maintain the highest level of structural integrity without impacting the accuracy or shape of the light surround. By adopting these methods, you can help ensure the long-term reliability of the copper circuitry.

Method #1: The Gradual Turn This approach involves distributing the turn across two pre-existing notches in the strip. By creating two 45° angles rather than a single sharp bend, the strip maintains a slightly rounded profile. This reduces mechanical tension on the internal components while preserving the precise alignment of the LEDs for an optimal surround effect.

Method #2: The Loose Loop:
The "loose loop" method is particularly effective when using alternative adhesives, such as nano tape, or if you anticipate the need for future removal. In this configuration, the corner of the strip is not pressed directly against the display. This "floating" corner provides maximum flexibility and eliminates potential strain on the copper without affecting the quality of the light output.

Revised Guidance for Cornering

We are revising our previous guidance to prioritize the long-term durability of our product. While a sharp, 90° fold will be perfectly fine in most installations, it can introduce unnecessary stress on the flexible copper strip. In a small percentage of cases, less than 1% from warranty experience, this stress can lead to micro-tears that may take years to manifest.

We have included a red "X" over the 90° fold image to ensure it is not mistaken for our current recommended instructions. However, it is important to note that using a 90° fold is not a violation of the installation instructions and will not impact your warranty.

By utilizing the Gradual Turn or Loose Loop methods, you virtually eliminate the risk of tearing the corner. These updated techniques provide the same high-quality lighting experience while potentially improving the physical longevity of your installation.

This is why we no longer recommend the harsh 90-degree turn. While it will be fine 99 times out of 100, we believe that if we can reduce the risk of damage towards zero, we should. Of course, we will continue to repair or replace any damage under warranty, as always. This is simply an effort to help avoid unnecessary damage and ensure your setup remains perfect for years to come.

4) Secure Strip: Once positioned, gently press along the run. Use included clips and tabs to secure excess wire and place the IR receiver. You can use flat clips to secure the strip over removable panel covers, as found on some TVs. That way you can remove the strip easily if you need to access those ports.

✂️ Cutting the MediaLight Mk2 v2 Strip

  • Cut only at the white cut lines. Thin white lines run across the strip at regular intervals. These lines mark the only places where you should cut.

  • Always cut the end furthest from the power. If you cut the power end, the strip will not function.
  • Dry-fit first. Install the strip fully around the TV, power it on, and confirm placement before making any cuts. This prevents accidentally cutting the strip too short.
  • Cut conservatively. Once cut, the removed section cannot be reattached without a connector clip. Contact us if you need a connector clip.

IR Receiver Placement

  • Line of sight is required. The IR receiver must be visible from the front of the TV for the remote to work reliably.
  • Minimal protrusion is sufficient. In most installations, the receiver only needs to extend slightly beyond the edge of the panel. Depending on TV height and seating position, it’s usually not noticeable.
  • Clean placement options: Just under the bottom edge of the screen, near a lower corner, or tucked along the bezel while still facing forward.
  • Why not RF? We intentionally avoid radio-frequency remotes. RF dimmers can introduce interference, which is unacceptable for professional environments. MediaLight is used by major studios and post-production facilities, and we apply the same standard to home installations.

5) Connect Dimmer & Power: Connect dimmer, omit extension cable if not needed, and plug into the display’s USB port or an adapter.
Note: Use only with 5 V USB power—never connect to 12 V or higher sources.

6) Test & Adjust: Turn on the TV, confirm power, and adjust brightness with the remote.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid over-bending: Copper tears if folded sharply. Use multiple flex points for smooth turns.
  • Uneven backs: If your TV has irregular surfaces, bridge gaps at ~45° so LEDs still face the wall evenly.
  • Cutting: Only cut on the white cut lines across the contacts. Cut the side furthest from power (if you cut the power end, the lights won’t work).

Troubleshooting

  • Dimmer issues: Only one dimmer per strip.
  • Remote: Ensure clear line of sight to IR sensor. Replace the coin battery if unresponsive.
  • Strip won’t power: Bypass the dimmer and plug directly into USB to test.
  • Partial strip lights: Check the connection point where the lights stop.
