That depends on what matters to you.
Do you care about the quality of the light in your viewing environment, or just that there is one? Do you value color accuracy, or is "close enough" close enough? Even if accuracy is not your primary concern, does it matter to you that the light behind your display is flicker-free, full-spectrum, and close to natural sunlight rather than the narrow, spiky output of a cheap LED? Do you want to know that what you buy today will work years from now, backed by a real warranty from a company that has been in the imaging business for over seventeen years? Or would you rather take your chances on a $15 LED strip recommended by internet strangers who have never calibrated a display in their lives?
These are not trick questions. There are honest answers on both sides. But if you are still reading, you probably already know which side you are on.
What We Build and Why
Every film, television show, and streaming title you watch was mastered under D65 lighting. That is the white point of the professional world: 6500K, the reference standard for color grading, broadcast, and post-production. It is the baseline assumption behind every creative decision a colorist makes.
MediaLight exists to bring that same reference illumination into your viewing environment. When the light behind your display matches the light under which the content was graded, your display can do what it was designed to do: show you exactly what the filmmaker intended. Without it, your eyes are adapting to whatever ambient light happens to be in the room, and your brain is reinterpreting every color on screen to compensate. You are watching a version of the image that exists only in your room, not the one that was authored.
That is what accuracy means in this context. Not a spec sheet number. Not a marketing term. A viewing condition.
Who This Is For
Our customers tend to fall into a few categories.
Calibration-conscious home theaters. You have invested in a quality display. You may have had it professionally calibrated, or you have done it yourself. You understand that a calibrated display in an uncontrolled lighting environment is only half-calibrated. MediaLight closes the loop.
Professional and production environments. Edit suites, grading bays, broadcast facilities, screening rooms. D65 bias lighting is not optional in these spaces. It is the standard. Dolby, FSI, and ISF all specify D65 surround illumination for a reason.
Extended viewing sessions. If you spend hours in front of a screen, whether for work or entertainment, two things matter: flicker and spectral quality.
Most dimmable LED strips use low-frequency pulse-width modulation: they turn on and off hundreds or a few thousand times per second to simulate dimming. Your conscious mind does not notice. Your eyes do. Research published in Lighting Research & Technology has found that flicker in the 100-200 Hz range is detected by the human retina even when it is not consciously perceived, triggering neural responses associated with eye strain, fatigue, and headaches. MediaLight dims at a frequency well beyond that threshold. You will not see it, and your eyes will not feel it.
Then there is spectral quality. Your visual system works continuously to maintain stable color perception, and the completeness of the ambient light spectrum directly affects how hard it has to work. A full-spectrum, high-CRI source gives your brain a rich, consistent signal to adapt to. A cheap LED with a spiky, gapped spectrum forces your visual system to do more processing with less information. Over a long session, that difference accumulates. Studies in office and educational environments have found that high-CRI lighting (above 90) reduces visual discomfort by as much as 40% compared to lower-quality sources. Animal research has gone further: a peer-reviewed study exposing subjects to LEDs of varying CRI found that low-CRI exposure produced significantly more ocular surface damage, reduced tear production, and elevated inflammatory markers compared to high-CRI exposure.
You do not need to care about D65 accuracy to benefit from this. Even if calibration is not your priority, a full-spectrum, flicker-free light source is measurably easier on your eyes than a cheap alternative. You may not notice the difference in the first ten minutes. But after four hours, you will notice how you feel. (Here is some of the research behind that claim.)
People who keep what they buy. MediaLight USB strips carry a five-year warranty. LX1 carries two years. No other bias light on the market offers comparable coverage, because there is no other bias light on the market. There are LED strips. We can offer these warranties because the components justify them: custom-binned LEDs, high-CRI phosphors, and purpose-built dimming circuits. These are not commodity parts.
Features That Matter (If They Matter to You)
D65 accuracy. We cannot claim an exact color point for any LED product, and neither can anyone else, honestly. The final result on your wall depends on variables that include viewing angle, integration distance, wall surface, and the specific emitter bin. What we can tell you is what we do to get as close as possible: we use the tightest available LED binning, the highest quality emitters we can source, and every production run is tested and verified by our third-party lab partners. We are ISF certified. We put our money into the quality of the LEDs that are manufactured to our specifications, because that is where accuracy is won or lost.
Flicker-free dimming. Our dimming circuit operates at a frequency far above the range where flicker is perceptible. Generic LED strips dim at low frequencies that your eyes can detect even when your brain cannot. Dim the light to match your room, and it stays clean.
Auto-off with your display when supported. MediaLight USB strips are designed to be powered by your TV's USB port, so in many cases the light turns on and off with your display. No extra remotes, no smart plugs, no separate power management. On most TVs, it just works. Some TVs keep their USB ports powered in standby, which can usually be resolved with a setting change. Others (Sony, we're looking at you) do not offer that option at all. For those cases, we built the Maestro, and as a MediaLight or LX1 customer you get a special discount on it if you need one. The point is that this is designed to be part of your system, not something that requires its own workflow.
Full-spectrum output. High CRI means the light reproduces a broad, continuous spectrum rather than spiking at a few wavelengths and leaving gaps. That matters for color perception, and it matters for how your eyes feel after hours of use.
Industry-leading warranty. Five years on USB-powered MediaLight bias light strips. Three years on lamps, bulbs, and 24V strips. Two years on LX1. We do not hedge with fine print. If it fails, we take care of it.
Who This Probably Is Not For
If your main goal is simply putting some light behind a TV and you are not concerned with accuracy, quality, comfort or longevity, there are thousands of cheap LED strips available and you are welcome to take your chances. Some may help with eye strain. Some may make it worse. A strip with low-frequency flicker, a spiky spectrum, or poor color quality can introduce problems that were not there before. Whether you end up with something decent or something you regret is largely a matter of luck.
A common concern we hear is about blue light and circadian disruption. People see "6500K" and worry it will keep them awake. The reality is that intensity matters far more than color temperature in this context. A bias light is not a desk lamp or a ceiling fixture. It provides a dim surround behind your display, just enough to relieve the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room. At the low intensities a proper bias light operates at, circadian impact is negligible. What is not negligible is the difference between staring at a bright rectangle in a pitch-black room and staring at one with a proper surround. MediaLight is designed to give you the least amount of light that actually works. That is not a limitation. That is the point.
If cost is your primary concern, our LX1 line is priced comparably to many of the generic LED strips sold online. It has a slightly lower LED density and CRI than MediaLight, but it is flicker-free, still high-CRI, and backed by a two-year warranty. It is a real bias light built by people who understand what bias lighting is supposed to do.
We would rather say all of this plainly than have you buy something that solves a problem you are not trying to solve.
The difference between our products and the generic alternatives is not just accuracy. It is quality of light, safety of components, and confidence in the product. They are not flicker-free, they are not full-spectrum, they are not built with components that will hold their color point for years, and they do not come with a warranty that reflects confidence in what was built. If none of that matters to you right now, that is a perfectly reasonable position.
One More Thing
We have been doing this for over seventeen years. We have grown year over year, through every trend, every format war, and every shift in display technology. Standards have evolved, and our products have evolved with them. We were part of the recommendations that shaped bias lighting for HDR viewing environments, and we continue to refine what we build as the industry moves forward.

Selecting a lighting solution from the sea of generic, alphabet-soup brands online is still a gamble. Many of those products are designed with little regard for the hardware they are connected to, often exceeding the power specifications of a standard television USB port. Beyond the potential hardware risk, a poorly made light can actually make things worse: more eye strain, not less, and a viewing experience that looks worse than it did with the lights off. We have spent years engineering around exactly these problems so you do not have to think about them.
We recognize that many of our customers are willing to pay more specifically to avoid these pitfalls. They are not looking for a disposable accessory. They are looking for a reliable, engineered tool that works within the limits of their equipment and protects their visual health.
